Background & Impact
Year Awarded: 2024
Support Type: First Responder Assistance
Jacob “Jake” Lopez began his law enforcement career with the Sterling Heights Police Department in March 2018, serving on patrol and protecting his community. In November 2023, during his sixth year of service, Jake was diagnosed with Intradural Myxopapillary Ependymoma, WHO grade 2 — a rare tumor located inside his spinal cord. The condition brought significant challenges, affecting his ability to continue serving and impacting daily life with his wife and three children.
On January 31, 2024, The Jack Gargalino Memorial Foundation proudly presented Jake with $20,000 through our First Responder Assistance Program. This support, made possible by our generous donors and event participants, is intended to help provide the care and resources he needs as he navigates life after his diagnosis. Jake’s dedication, perseverance, and courage are an inspiration, and we are honored to recognize his service and commitment to his community.
